Lettera: writing in Markdown on Mac and iPhone

A clean editor, live preview and export anywhere. The name is a tribute to the Olivetti Lettera 22 — the typewriter that put writing in everyone's hands.

Lettera: writing in Markdown on Mac and iPhone

In 1950 Olivetti unveiled the Lettera 22: a portable typewriter, light and beautiful. It wasn't the most powerful, it was the most inviting. It removed every bit of friction between the idea and the page. New York's MoMA added it to its collection, and generations of writers and journalists carried it around the world.

When we built our text editor, that name was the only one possible. Lettera wants to do today what the Lettera 22 did then: disappear, and leave you alone with the words.

Why Markdown

Markdown is a wonderfully simple way to format text while you write, without lifting your hands from the keyboard. A # becomes a heading, two asterisks make a word bold, a dash starts a list. No toolbars, no menus: you write, and the formatting follows the thought.

It has become the standard for anyone who writes for the web, takes notes, documents software, or simply wants tidy text without the weight of a word processor. The beauty is that it stays plain text: readable everywhere, future-proof, never locked into a proprietary format.

A word processor asks you to think about formatting. Markdown lets you think about the text. That difference is bigger than it sounds.

What makes Lettera different

  • Clean editor — No distractions, just you and the page. Careful typography, room to breathe, zero visual noise.
  • Live preview — See the formatted result as you write, side by side with the text. What you write is what you'll get.
  • iCloud sync — Start a note on your iPhone on the subway and find it on your Mac at the office. Your documents follow you, with no account to create.
  • Export anywhere — Turn a document into PDF, HTML or Word with a tap. From Markdown to the format you need, ready to send.
  • 15 languages — The interface speaks the writer's language, anywhere in the world.
  • Privacy first — Your texts stay yours. No tracking, no data sent to third parties.

Who it's for

Lettera is for people who really write, in any context:

  • People who write for the web — bloggers, copywriters and anyone publishing content that's born ready for HTML.
  • Note-takers — students, professionals, anyone who wants tidy notes synced across every device.
  • Software developers — READMEs, technical docs and release notes live naturally in Markdown.
  • Anyone who just wants to write well — without the friction and weight of a traditional word processor.

Built for Apple, all the way down

Like all our apps, Lettera is native: it runs on iPhone, iPad and Mac and truly leans on the system, from the keyboard to the share sheet, from the Keychain to iCloud. It's not a web app in disguise: it's an app that feels — and is — part of your device.
